What is a Indigo Batik?

Indigo batik combines two traditional art forms: indigo dyeing and batik. The process uses indigo dye to color the batik fabric, creating beautiful blue designs.

Each piece is handmade and unique!

To create the batik, I apply hot wax to the fabric in specific areas to create a design. The wax acts as a resist, preventing the indigo dye from penetrating those areas.

Once the wax is applied, the fabric is immersed into an indigo dye bath. The dye seeps into the parts of the fabric that are not covered by wax. When the fabric is first pulled out of the vat, it appears green. As the fabric is exposed to oxygen, a chemical reaction occurs, and the green color turns into the characteristic deep blue (see the picture above). To achieve a darker shade of blue, the fabric is dipped into the indigo vat multiple times. After each dip, the fabric is allowed to oxidize and dry before repeating the process. Each dip adds layers of indigo color to the fabric.

Finally, the wax is removed from the fabric, either through boiling or ironing, to reveal the complete surface design.

Indigo batik showcases the rich blue hues of indigo dye combined with the patterns of batik. The combination of these two art forms creates a unique and visually stunning surface design.

This collection reflects the dynamic interplay between urban, natural, and the everyday landscapes, drawing inspiration from the patterns, textures, and layers. Each batik intricately weaves together the vibrancy of bustling streets, the architecture that defines our world, and the subtle traces of the human narrative.
